CalFire Releases New LRA Maps
In 1st Q 2025, CalFire released new Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps for the Local Responsibility Area (LRA). The new LRA maps include the “very high, high and moderate” hazard severity zones. Now, both the “High” and “Very High” zones are areas in the LRA where local jurisdictions must comply with the strictest fire-safety Chapter 7A building code and other regulations. The responsibility to respond to fires in California is designated to different entities: in the Local Responsibility Area (LRA), local fire departments are responsible for responding to fires; in the State Responsibility Area (SRA – updated maps released in 2024) Cal Fire is responsible; and in the Federal Responsibility Area (FRA) federal agencies respond to fires. Now, approximately one in four residential structures in California is located within or near “high” or “very high” fire hazard severity zones identified on state hazard severity zone maps.
